Raleigh, North Carolina – Heavy downpours could turn roads treacherous across central North Carolina this Wednesday as a widespread Flood Watch remains in effect through this evening. Low-lying neighborhoods, urban streets, and rural roadways face the highest risk, with rainfall rates topping one to two inches an hour at times.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, most of the region—including Wake, Durham, Guilford, and Cumberland counties—will see repeated rounds of rain through tonight. Flooding could develop quickly on major routes such as I-40, I-85, and U.S. 64, especially where drainage is poor or streams are already swollen. The risk for flash flooding is greatest in cities like Raleigh, Greensboro, Fayetteville, and Chapel Hill.

Emergency officials urge drivers to avoid water-covered roads and be prepared to change plans quickly. Residents living near creeks, streams, or rivers should keep devices charged, monitor weather updates, and move vehicles to higher ground if needed. Flood-prone areas, including the Neuse River basin and low-lying parts of Wake County, are especially vulnerable.

Showers and thunderstorms will become more intense into the afternoon and evening, with flood advisories possible if conditions worsen. The Flood Watch remains in effect until late tonight, and additional warnings could be issued as the system lingers.
