Raleigh, NC – Fires could ignite and spread rapidly across North Carolina today, with a statewide burn ban now in effect as dry air and gusty winds peak during the afternoon hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, wind gusts will reach up to 20 mph while relative humidity drops as low as 15 to 30 percent, creating ideal conditions for fast-moving fires. The highest risk window runs from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday across central North Carolina.

The North Carolina Forest Service has issued a burn ban for all 100 counties, prohibiting all open burning until further notice, including for permit holders. Areas across the Piedmont, including Raleigh, Durham, and Greensboro, face the greatest concern where lower humidity and stronger winds overlap.

Residents should avoid any activity that could spark a fire, including outdoor burning, using equipment that creates sparks, or discarding cigarettes. Vehicles should not be parked on dry grass, as heat from engines can ignite fires.

Fire danger will remain elevated through the evening before conditions begin to ease slightly overnight. Additional restrictions or advisories may continue if dry weather persists into early week.
