Raleigh, North Carolina – Drivers across central North Carolina are facing a challenging start to the day as dense fog blankets large portions of the Piedmont and Sandhills, sharply reducing visibility during the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. for much of central North Carolina. Visibility may drop to a quarter mile or less at times, especially in low-lying areas and along major travel corridors. Conditions can change rapidly, with clear stretches giving way to sudden pockets of thick fog.

The fog is impacting communities including Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, Chapel Hill, Fayetteville, Sanford, Southern Pines, and surrounding areas. Major roadways such as I-40, I-85, U.S. 1, and U.S. 64 may see reduced visibility, increasing the risk of slowdowns and accidents during peak travel hours.

Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and use low-beam headlights. High beams can reflect off the fog and make visibility worse. Extra caution is also advised near intersections, school zones, and rural roads where fog may be densest.

Fog conditions are expected to gradually improve by mid-morning as temperatures rise and mixing increases. While travel should become easier later today, officials remind drivers to remain alert early, as dense fog can linger longer than expected in some areas.
