Raleigh, North Carolina – Elevated fire danger is expected across central North Carolina during New Year’s Eve due to gusty winds and very dry conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, an Increased Fire Danger alert is in effect Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., coinciding with New Year’s Eve daytime hours. Winds are expected to gust between 15 and 25 mph, while relative humidity levels may drop as low as 25 to 35 percent.
These conditions, combined with dry grasses and tree litter, create an increased risk for fires to ignite and spread quickly. Officials warn that even small outdoor fires could become difficult to control in a short period of time.
The alert covers much of central North Carolina, including the Triangle and surrounding counties. Areas near major travel corridors such as Interstate 40, Interstate 85, U.S. Highway 1, and U.S. 64 may see rapid fire spread if a roadside or debris fire ignites during peak wind periods.
While conditions will ease later this evening, residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning throughout the day. Fire officials also recommend securing trailer chains, properly disposing of smoking materials, and delaying fireworks or fire pits until safer conditions return.
For New Year’s Eve tonight, winds are expected to gradually diminish. New Year’s Day (Thursday) will bring calmer weather, though officials advise continued caution until moisture levels improve.
This alert is especially relevant for commuters, construction crews, and outdoor workers traveling or working during holiday hours.
