RALEIGH, N.C. – A quiet but chilly night is ahead for much of central North Carolina, with frost likely in many rural and outlying areas by early Friday morning. The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a Frost Advisory for most of the region except the far south, warning that unprotected plants could be damaged as temperatures dip into the mid-30s overnight.
According to the NWS, calm winds and clear skies will allow temperatures to fall quickly after sunset, producing widespread frost across the Triangle, Sandhills, and northern Piedmont. Lows will range from 33 to 40 degrees, coldest in outlying communities north and west of Raleigh. Gardeners are advised to cover sensitive vegetation and bring in potted plants before bedtime.
Friday will bring a transition back to mild fall conditions. Skies will be partly to mostly cloudy, and a light southwest breeze will help push afternoon highs into the upper 60s to lower 70s. Scattered showers could develop late Friday evening mainly north of the U.S. 64 corridor, but the day will stay dry for most areas.
The weekend looks seasonable, with highs in the 60s and chilly nights returning early next week under mostly clear skies.
