RALEIGH, N.C. – The coldest air of the season is set to arrive early next week, bringing a widespread freeze across much of central and eastern North Carolina. Temperatures are expected to plunge into the mid-20s to near 30°F Monday night into Tuesday morning, ending the growing season for many areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, this will be the first significant freeze of fall 2025, with temperatures running 10 to 12 degrees below normal. Clear skies and calm winds will create ideal conditions for a hard freeze across the Triangle, Sandhills, and Piedmont regions. Rural areas could see lows as cold as 24°F by dawn Tuesday.
Residents are urged to protect sensitive plants, disconnect garden hoses, and bring pets indoors. Those without frost protection should also cover outdoor faucets and ensure heating systems are functioning properly.
No precipitation is expected with this cold outbreak, though the chill will linger into midweek. Highs Tuesday will struggle to reach the upper 40s before a slow warmup returns later in the week.
