Raleigh, N.C. – Scorching heat and the risk of severe storms will challenge much of North Carolina through Saturday evening, with the highest threat focused west of U.S. Highway 1. Heat index readings are expected to climb into the upper 90s, adding to health and travel concerns.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, afternoon highs will reach the upper 80s to mid-90s, while scattered showers and thunderstorms move west to east across the state. Isolated strong to severe storms could develop after 2 p.m., producing damaging winds and hail.

Cities including Raleigh, Greensboro, and Fayetteville are forecast to feel like 95–99°F during peak afternoon hours. Rocky Mount, Roanoke Rapids, and Southern Pines could see heavy downpours that make driving hazardous late in the day.

Emergency officials urge residents to limit time outdoors during peak heating, stay hydrated, and secure outdoor items that could blow away in strong winds. Motorists should be alert for sudden downpours and reduced visibility on interstates and secondary roads.

The severe weather risk is expected to diminish after sunset, though additional updates may be issued if storms intensify.
