Raleigh, NC – Residents across central and eastern North Carolina face a dual weather threat Thursday as forecasters warn of both severe storms and dangerous heat conditions.
According to the US National Weather Service in Raleigh, strong to severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening, especially north and west of the Triangle. The main hazard is damaging wind gusts that could exceed 60 mph, with the greatest risk between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.
At the same time, the southern and eastern parts of the region, including Raleigh, Durham, and surrounding counties, will see unusually hot and humid conditions. Forecasters say temperatures will run 10 to 15 degrees above average, pushing the heat index to between 95 and 100 degrees. This marks the third consecutive day of dangerous heat levels, which increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
The Weather Service urges residents to take precautions by limiting outdoor activity, staying in air-conditioned or shaded spaces, and monitoring local forecasts for storm updates. Commuters and travelers should prepare for sudden weather changes late Thursday afternoon.
This combination of storm threats and high heat makes today particularly hazardous for communities across Wake County, the Triangle, and much of central North Carolina.
