RALEIGH, N.C. – A crisp fall air mass has settled across central North Carolina Thursday, bringing breezy northeast winds and cooler temperatures. Gusts up to 25 mph are expected through mid-afternoon before calming this evening. Highs will stay mild, topping out in the upper 60s to low 70s across the Triangle and Sandhills.

According to the National Weather Service office in Raleigh, much drier air will remain in place through tonight, allowing temperatures to fall sharply after sunset. Overnight lows will dip into the mid-40s to low 50s across Wake, Durham, and Johnston counties, with the chilliest readings in rural valleys.

The gusty northeast flow may cause light debris on roads and minor travel impacts for high-profile vehicles along I-40 and U.S. 64 this afternoon. Outdoor events and school activities should remain dry but breezy, with jackets recommended for evening games.

Residents are urged to secure lightweight decorations and bring in plants or pets sensitive to cooler air. Power disruptions are not expected, but breezes could briefly increase late this afternoon before diminishing overnight.

Warmer air will return gradually by the weekend, though mornings will remain crisp. The next chance for any rain looks to hold off until early next week as winds turn lighter and more southerly.
