RALEIGH, N.C. – Central North Carolina closed out August 2025 with a climate more typical of the Northeast, as Raleigh and Greensboro both ranked among the top 10 coldest Augusts on record. Greensboro averaged just 73.5 degrees for the month, the city’s eighth coldest August, while Raleigh came in at 74.7 degrees, its ninth coldest.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, Greensboro logged the fewest 85-degree days in August history and only reached 90 degrees once. Raleigh’s warmest day peaked at 92 degrees, but otherwise stayed well below normal, with average highs nearly 6 degrees cooler than usual.

Fayetteville also ran cooler than normal, averaging 77 degrees with highs capped at 92. Precipitation diverged sharply across the region: Raleigh saw nearly 8 inches of rain, more than 3 inches above normal, while Greensboro and Fayetteville both recorded rainfall deficits.

The unusual cool streak made central North Carolina’s August climate comparable to northern cities — Greensboro aligning with Boston, Raleigh with New York City, and Fayetteville with Philadelphia.

Temperatures are expected to moderate in early September, but the National Weather Service cautions more variability could follow as the region transitions into fall.
