Raleigh, NC – The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a Freeze Warning for central North Carolina, in effect from 8 p.m. Monday to 9 a.m. Tuesday, as arctic air surges into the region overnight.
Forecasters warn that sub-freezing temperatures between 21°F and 30°F will affect much of the Triangle and surrounding counties, including Wake, Durham, Orange, Johnston, and Harnett. Wind chills could make conditions feel even colder, with values dipping into the teens by daybreak.
At Raleigh-Durham International Airport, conditions late Monday showed 52°F with northwest winds near 18 mph, but temperatures are expected to drop sharply after sunset. A few flurries may briefly appear before skies clear overnight.
The NWS cautions that frost and freeze conditions may kill crops, harm sensitive vegetation, and damage unprotected outdoor plumbing. Residents are urged to cover plants, wrap pipes, and ensure pets have warm shelter.
After the cold start Tuesday, sunshine will return with highs rebounding to near 48°F, followed by a steady warm-up through midweek, reaching the 60s by Wednesday.
