Raleigh, North Carolina – Steady rain is soaking central North Carolina right now, with the heaviest bands pushing across the I-40 and I-440 corridors through 2 p.m. Thursday, slowing traffic and creating ponding on area roadways.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, rain coverage peaks through midday with precipitation probabilities between 85 and 95 percent across Wake, Durham and Orange counties. Rainfall totals are expected to range from 1 to 1.5 inches in many communities, including Raleigh, Cary and Chapel Hill. Localized totals could approach the higher end of that range where steadier bands persist.

Drivers along I-40, US-1 and I-85 should expect reduced visibility and standing water in low-lying spots, particularly during heavier bursts late this morning. While widespread flooding is not anticipated, brief runoff issues may develop in poor drainage areas and along urban corridors.

Rain will gradually taper from west to east late this afternoon, but areas of drizzle could linger into the evening commute. Temperatures will hold in the 40s to near 50 degrees, limiting instability and keeping thunder chances low.

Conditions improve overnight as steadier rain exits, though damp roads may persist into early Friday. Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time through early afternoon and monitor updated statements in case rainfall rates briefly intensify or localized advisories are issued.
