Raleigh, North Carolina – Rain will intensify across central North Carolina this afternoon, with up to 1.5 inches falling by late Sunday night and ponding likely on major roadways including I-40 and the I-440 Beltline before the evening commute ends.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a solid band of moderate to heavy rain will expand from west to east through Sunday afternoon and evening. Rain chances climb to near 100 percent in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and Fayetteville, with totals generally between 1 and 1.5 inches. The heaviest rainfall is expected across the Piedmont.

Urban corridors along Capital Boulevard, Glenwood Avenue and stretches of US-1 and US-64 could see brief heavy downpours capable of overwhelming storm drains. Isolated urban and poor drainage flooding remains possible, especially in low-lying neighborhoods and construction zones. Drivers should slow down on wet pavement and avoid water-covered roads Sunday evening.

Greensboro and Winston-Salem will see rain taper first late tonight, while showers linger longest east toward Rocky Mount. Conditions gradually improve after midnight as rain exits from west to east.

While the rainfall will help ease ongoing drought conditions, brief heavy rates could still cause travel disruptions. Additional advisories may be issued if localized flooding develops before rain ends late Sunday night.
