Raleigh, NC – Much of central and northern North Carolina faces a messy winter weather day as a mix of rain and snow moves through the region, bringing up to 2 inches of snow in spots and dangerous travel conditions by tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, rain will begin mixing with snow through the morning across the Triad and Triangle before changing to all snow by early afternoon. Areas closer to the Virginia line—including Roxboro, Henderson, and north of Greensboro—could see totals near 2 inches. Lighter accumulations around ½ inch are expected farther south.

The wintry system is expected to end around sunset, but forecasters warn the most hazardous conditions may come after precipitation stops.

Very cold air will surge into North Carolina this evening, with low temperatures plunging into the upper teens to low 20s across much of the Piedmont. The rapid drop may trigger a flash freeze, turning wet roads into sheets of ice. Black ice risk is highest late tonight through Tuesday morning.

Commuters in the Triad may see a rain–snow mix during the morning drive, while the Triangle is expected to remain mostly rain until midday. Both regions may see all snow by afternoon. NWS officials caution that even minor accumulations could quickly become hazardous due to the extreme cold arriving behind the system.
