Raleigh, NC – Residents across central North Carolina are being urged to use caution today as a Red Flag Warning goes into effect from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., bringing dangerous fire weather conditions and elevated wildfire risk.
According to the National Weather Service Raleigh, a combination of rapidly falling humidity and strong winds will create an environment where fires can start and spread quickly. Wind gusts are expected to reach 25 to 30 mph, with occasional bursts as high as 35 to 40 mph behind a dry frontal passage moving across the region. Forecasters say relative humidity levels may drop to around 20%, significantly increasing the risk.
The warning covers multiple counties across central and eastern North Carolina, including Wake, Durham, Johnston, Franklin, Harnett, Nash, Wilson, and surrounding areas. Officials say the driest period is expected early to mid-afternoon, when the strongest winds will overlap with the lowest humidity levels.
According to fire officials, even a small spark—from outdoor burning, machinery, or a discarded cigarette—could quickly escalate under today’s conditions. Residents are strongly advised to avoid any outdoor burning, secure loose items, and use caution with grills, power tools, and vehicles that may create heat or sparks.
The North Carolina Forest Service notes that fire crews are prepared for rapidly changing conditions and ask the public to report any signs of smoke or fire immediately.
NWS forecasters expect conditions to improve after sunset as humidity begins to recover and winds weaken. However, officials say the region will remain unusually dry through the remainder of the week, keeping fire danger elevated.
Anyone planning to be outdoors today is encouraged to stay aware of changing weather conditions and follow updates from local emergency management agencies.
