Raleigh, North Carolina — A surge of Arctic air moving into central North Carolina today will bring blustery conditions and a hard freeze to the Raleigh area tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, temperatures today are expected to remain in the low to mid-30s, with wind chill values in the 20s making it feel colder throughout the day. Gusty winds will persist into the evening as colder air continues to settle in.

Forecasters say temperatures will drop rapidly after sunset, with overnight lows falling into the mid-teens to near 20 degrees across much of the Raleigh metro area. These conditions meet criteria for a hard freeze, which can damage unprotected pipes, sensitive vegetation, and outdoor plumbing.

The National Weather Service advised residents to protect exposed pipes, bring pets indoors, and ensure adequate heating for vulnerable populations. Any remaining moisture on roadways may also freeze overnight, particularly on bridges and overpasses.

Cold conditions are expected to continue into Friday morning before a gradual moderation later in the day.

This alert is especially relevant for early-morning commuters, outdoor workers, and households with exposed plumbing, as the coldest temperatures will occur overnight into the early morning hours.
