Raleigh, North Carolina – A low-end severe weather threat is in place for central North Carolina late Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening, with damaging wind gusts identified as the primary concern.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a Marginal Risk, Level 1 out of 5, has been issued for much of central North Carolina for Saturday, Jan. 10. The threat window is expected to develop late Saturday afternoon and continue into the evening hours as a weather system moves through the region.

Forecasters said isolated severe thunderstorms may form during this period. While widespread severe weather is not expected, any stronger storms that develop could produce localized damaging wind gusts. The risk for tornadoes and large hail remains very low, and those hazards were not emphasized in the outlook.

The National Weather Service stressed that a marginal risk means storms will be isolated and limited in coverage, but impacts can still occur where storms intensify. Wind damage could include downed tree limbs, minor structural damage, or sporadic power outages.

Timing graphics released by the Weather Service show the greatest concern centered between late afternoon and late evening, with the threat diminishing overnight as the system moves east.

Residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware throughout Saturday, especially those with outdoor plans, sporting events, or evening travel. Officials recommend having multiple ways to receive weather warnings, including mobile alerts and NOAA Weather Radio, in case storms strengthen quickly.

No flooding concerns were highlighted with this outlook, and rainfall amounts are not expected to be excessive.

Conditions are expected to improve later Saturday night, with quieter and cooler weather developing behind the system. The National Weather Service will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as confidence increases regarding storm coverage and intensity.
