Raleigh, NC – Fire crews across North Carolina are on alert Monday afternoon as dry air and gusty winds combine to create conditions that could spark and spread fires within minutes.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, an Increased Fire Danger is in effect from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday, with wind gusts reaching 20 to 25 mph and relative humidity dropping as low as 25%. The highest risk targets areas along and west of U.S. Highway 1, including the western Piedmont.
Cities such as Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, and Fayetteville could see fast-moving grass or brush fires if ignition occurs. Open fields, construction zones, and roadside areas along I-40 and I-85 are especially vulnerable where dry vegetation is exposed. Emergency officials warn that even a small spark from discarded cigarettes or equipment could ignite flames that spread rapidly in these conditions.
Residents are urged to avoid any outdoor burning, secure trailer chains, and delay yard work involving machinery that could produce sparks. Power equipment should be used cautiously, especially during peak wind hours late this afternoon.
Conditions begin to ease after 10 p.m., but fire risk could return if dry weather persists into midweek. Additional advisories may be issued if winds remain elevated.
