Raleigh, North Carolina – Falling temperatures tonight could lead to patchy black ice across the Raleigh area, creating localized travel hazards into Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, temperatures across central North Carolina are expected to drop into the upper teens to lower 20s overnight, allowing any lingering moisture on roads to freeze. While snowfall amounts have been reduced, very isolated dustings or light coatings of snow remain possible, mainly north of the Highway 64 corridor.

The National Weather Service says most locations will see no measurable snow, though brief slushy spots could develop on bridges, overpasses, and elevated surfaces this evening. All precipitation is expected to move out of central North Carolina by 7 p.m. Sunday.

Forecasters warn that black ice may develop tonight into Monday morning, especially in shaded areas and on untreated roads. Travel impacts are expected to be isolated, but drivers are urged to remain cautious during the early Monday commute.

Roadways most vulnerable include Interstate 40, Interstate 440, U.S. 1, U.S. 64, and local elevated ramps, where surfaces cool more quickly after sunset. Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing by around 10 a.m. Monday, reducing the risk of icy spots.

In addition to travel concerns, wind chills in the lower 20s are expected overnight, making it feel colder than actual temperatures.

Officials encourage motorists to slow down, watch for slick spots, and allow extra time if traveling late tonight or early Monday.
