Raleigh, NC – Snowflakes still cling to rooftops across the Triangle this morning, while a biting Arctic chill sweeps through the state. Temperatures in the teens and low 20s have locked in overnight moisture, creating a widespread flash freeze and treacherous morning drive across central North Carolina.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon. Additional light snow accumulations up to one inch are possible in portions of the Northern Piedmont and Coastal Plain, including Raleigh, Durham, and Greensboro. Roadways, bridges, and sidewalks may be coated with thin layers of ice after Monday’s snow refroze under plunging early-morning temperatures.

Residents are urged to slow down, avoid sudden stops, and use caution when walking on untreated surfaces. Conditions will gradually improve after midday as temperatures climb toward the upper 30s, though shaded areas may remain slick through the afternoon.

The cold snap marks the start of a broader early-December freeze pattern expected to grip much of the eastern U.S. this week. By Thursday, highs near 47°F and sunny skies will offer brief relief before another push of colder air returns this weekend, keeping lows near 20°F.

5-Day Outlook (Dec. 9–13)

  • Tuesday: High 40°F, icy roads early; clearing by afternoon.
  • Wednesday: High 54°F, breezy and partly sunny.
  • Thursday: High 47°F, sunny and cool.
  • Friday: High 49°F, mostly sunny.
  • Saturday: High 57°F, mild before next chill.
