Raleigh, NC – A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect across a large portion of central North Carolina this morning, with visibility expected to fall to a quarter mile or less through 8 a.m. EST Saturday. The National Weather Service in Raleigh warns that some areas in the Piedmont may briefly drop to near zero visibility, creating dangerous driving conditions.
According to the National Weather Service, dense fog developed quickly late Friday across counties from the Triangle to the Triad and Sandhills, including Wake, Durham, Orange, Johnston, Guilford, Forsyth, Alamance, Chatham, Randolph, Davidson, Person, Granville, Vance, Warren, Halifax, Nash, Edgecombe, Wilson, Lee, Harnett, Wayne, Sampson, Stanly and Montgomery.
Major cities affected include Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Cary, Chapel Hill, Burlington, Smithfield, Sanford, Rocky Mount, Wilson, Goldsboro and Asheboro. Commuters traveling along I-40, I-85, US-1, US-64, US-70 and NC-98 may experience sudden drops in visibility, especially in low-lying areas, near open fields and along river valleys.
Forecasters say widespread fog is expected to persist through early morning before gradually lifting after sunrise. Drivers are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and maintain extra distance between vehicles. Officials also emphasize caution around school zones early this morning as buses begin their routes.
While no precipitation is expected, road spray and lingering surface moisture may make conditions more challenging in dense patches of fog.
