Raleigh, North Carolina – Training thunderstorms are raising flash flood concerns across central North Carolina, with some areas potentially seeing up to 5 inches of rain through early Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a Flood Watch remains in effect for the entire region. Heavy rain that fell earlier this morning will be followed by another round between 2 p.m. and 2 a.m. tonight. Repeated storms over already saturated ground could lead to life-threatening flash flooding, especially in urban areas and low-lying locations.
Several counties including Wake, Durham, Cumberland, Johnston, and Alamance are under alert, with creeks and drainage systems likely to overflow during peak rainfall. Some locations have already seen 4 inches of rain, and additional bursts could overwhelm roads such as I-40, US-70, and NC-55.
Drivers should avoid water-covered roads and residents are urged to move valuables off basement floors, charge phones, and monitor local alerts. Flash flooding can develop quickly with little warning.
The Flood Watch remains in effect until at least 2 a.m. Wednesday, with further watches possible if storms continue overnight.
