Morehead City, North Carolina — Rainfall will continue to overspread eastern North Carolina today along a stalled frontal boundary, with little change to the overall forecast, according to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City.
Forecasters say there remains a chance for rain to change over to a rain/snow mix or even plain snow late this afternoon into the evening, with the greatest risk along and north of Highway 264. The latest guidance suggests a low-end chance (less than 10%) for minor snow accumulations, generally coating to around one inch, across parts of the northwest coastal plain, including Martin, Pitt, and Washington Counties.
Snow accumulation may be difficult initially, as temperatures remain just above freezing. However, minor travel impacts are possible this evening if rain transitions to snow sooner than currently expected.
In addition to the snowfall risk, black ice formation is possible overnight as temperatures drop quickly into the 20s, which could lead to slick spots late tonight and into the Monday morning commute. The National Weather Service notes that black ice can form on roadways, along curbs, and near drainage areas, and may be more prevalent at night but still present in the morning.
Motorists are urged to remain alert for changing conditions and exercise caution when traveling.
