Davenport, Iowa – Drivers across eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois could encounter slick roads tonight as a fast-moving band of snow spreads across the region, with impacts expected during the evening commute and lasting into early Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from early this evening through Wednesday morning for portions of eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois. Snow is expected to develop around sunset and continue overnight, with totals ranging from 2 to 4 inches. Locally higher amounts are possible where heavier snow bands set up.
The advisory includes Buchanan, Delaware, and Dubuque counties in Iowa, along with Jo Daviess and Stephenson counties in Illinois. Cities such as Dubuque, Manchester, Independence, Galena, and Freeport are likely to see roads turn snow-covered quickly, especially west of the Mississippi River where snowfall rates may briefly increase.
Forecasters say the most hazardous travel conditions are expected during the Tuesday evening commute, when snow-covered roads and reduced visibility could slow traffic. Bridges, ramps, and untreated secondary roads may become especially slick.
Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and check road conditions before heading out. Snow is expected to taper off toward daybreak Wednesday, but lingering slick spots may still affect early morning travel. Additional advisories could be issued if snowfall trends higher overnight.
