Quad Cities, Iowa — A burst of late-summer heat will grip much of eastern Iowa this weekend, with temperatures pushing heat indices into the mid to upper 90s by Saturday afternoon and again on Sunday. The National Weather Service warns that the combination of heat and humidity could make conditions dangerous for anyone spending extended time outdoors.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, peak heat index values will reach between 95 and 100 degrees both Saturday and Sunday. Cities including Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Burlington, and Dubuque are all expected to feel the brunt of the heat during the afternoon hours, with the hottest stretch between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Residents are urged to take precautions, including drinking plenty of water, avoiding strenuous outdoor activity, and taking frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. The heat will linger through Sunday evening before easing slightly overnight into Monday.
Road crews, athletes, and outdoor workers should exercise extra caution, as the high humidity will limit the body’s ability to cool itself. Pets should also be kept indoors where possible, as the risk of heat stress rises quickly in these conditions.
Heat advisories are not yet in effect, but officials caution that additional alerts may be issued if conditions worsen.
