Davenport, Iowa – Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms could develop across eastern Iowa and western Illinois on Sunday, bringing the potential for large hail, damaging winds, and a brief tornado.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, storms may begin developing as early as Sunday morning, with the primary window for stronger storms expected between noon and 7 p.m.
Much of the region, including Davenport, Moline, Rock Island, Burlington, and Cedar Rapids, is currently under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather. Areas farther southeast toward Galesburg and Princeton, Illinois, fall within a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) where the chances for severe storms are somewhat higher.
Forecasters say any storm that becomes severe could produce hail up to the size of quarters, strong wind gusts capable of downing tree limbs, and isolated tornadoes.
Meteorologists caution that uncertainty remains regarding the exact timing and intensity of storms, but residents should continue monitoring forecast updates throughout the day.
Officials recommend having multiple ways to receive weather warnings and staying alert if outdoor plans are scheduled Sunday afternoon or evening.
