Davenport, Iowa – Drivers across eastern Iowa and western Illinois could face near-zero visibility during the Wednesday morning commute as dense fog spreads overnight, especially in counties near the Mississippi River.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, fog will continue to develop through the early morning hours and persist until around 8 a.m. CDT Wednesday. Some locations may see visibility drop to as little as one-quarter mile, creating hazardous travel conditions.
Fog is expected to be most prevalent along and east of the Mississippi River, including cities like Davenport, Moline, Bettendorf, and Rock Island. Major roadways such as I-74, US-61, and I-80 may be affected. Commuters should allow extra travel time, use low-beam headlights, and maintain greater following distance when driving through fog.
While no formal advisory is in effect, officials stress caution. Dense fog is common in low-lying areas near rivers during humid summer mornings, but this event could be more widespread than usual.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve after 8 a.m. However, updates may follow if visibility deteriorates further.
