Quad Cities, IA/IL – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected across eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois today, with the greatest threat occurring between noon and 7 p.m. Damaging winds and isolated tornadoes could impact areas from Dubuque to Peoria, including the Quad Cities.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, storms will track east at 40 mph along a cold front, bringing a 40–60% chance of severe activity. Affected areas include Clinton, Freeport, and Sterling, which are under a Level 2 “Slight Risk” for severe weather. Areas farther west, including Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, and Mt. Pleasant, remain under a Level 1 “Marginal Risk.”

Hazards include wind gusts over 60 mph, brief tornadoes, and torrential downpours. While flash flooding isn’t likely, heavy rain could still cause localized ponding. Heat indices will also climb into the upper 90s across the southeast before storms arrive, prompting additional health concerns.

Residents should remain weather-aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings. If outdoors, stay hydrated, check on vulnerable individuals, and have a plan to seek shelter quickly.

Storm threats should ease after sunset, but additional advisories may follow if storm activity lingers into the evening.
