Davenport, IA – A stretch of needed rainfall is on the way for eastern Iowa and western Illinois as scattered showers and thunderstorms move in Friday evening and continue into early Sunday. The National Weather Service in the Quad Cities reports that rain will arrive from the west tonight ahead of a cold front, with most areas receiving between a quarter and three-quarters of an inch by Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, the first wave of rain will occur Friday night into Saturday morning, followed by a midday lull. Another round of showers and isolated rumbles of thunder is expected Saturday evening as the front exits the region. No severe weather is anticipated, though brief lightning and locally heavy downpours are possible.
Rainfall will be most beneficial east of the Mississippi River and across southeast Iowa, where totals may approach half an inch or more. Roads could briefly become slick during heavier bursts of rain, especially along I-80, I-88, and US-61.
The weather service notes that the system should move out by early Sunday, leaving behind cooler and drier fall air. The rain will provide some welcome relief for parched lawns and fields before temperatures dip into the 50s to start next week.
