Davenport, IA – Residents across the Quad Cities region are waking up to the coldest air of the season, with wind chills plunging between -5°F and -20°F Thursday morning, according to the US National Weather Service Quad Cities.
The bitter cold, caused by a surge of arctic air, will persist through tonight before slightly moderating on Friday. Temperatures are expected to remain in the single digits and low teens through the morning before climbing into the mid-20s by afternoon.
The coldest wind chills are being recorded early Thursday across Burlington, Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, and Iowa City, where “feels-like” temperatures are near -15°F to -20°F. Forecasters say another round of subzero chills is expected overnight, though slightly milder conditions will arrive Friday morning.
The Weather Service is reminding residents to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers, and cover exposed skin to prevent frostbite. Pets and livestock should also be protected from the extreme cold.
While no major snow is expected, the prolonged chill will keep roads icy and sidewalks slick in some areas.
