Davenport, Iowa – Dangerous Arctic cold has firmly settled across eastern Iowa and western Illinois, bringing life-threatening wind chills that are making even brief time outdoors hazardous this morning across the Quad Cities region.

According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, wind chills early today are expected to range from 25 to 35 degrees below zero south of Interstate 80, with even harsher conditions north of I-80 where wind chills of 35 to 40 degrees below zero are possible. An Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect across much of the region through midday, especially for communities north of the interstate.

Cities including Davenport, Bettendorf, Moline, Rock Island, Cedar Rapids, and Dubuque are seeing the most dangerous conditions, particularly during the early morning hours. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes in these temperatures. Officials urge residents to limit outdoor exposure, dress in multiple layers, and cover all exposed skin if travel is unavoidable.

While wind chills may slowly improve later today, dangerously cold air is expected to linger into the weekend. Overnight lows will remain well below zero, and daytime temperatures will struggle to recover, prolonging the risk of cold-related injuries.

Residents are encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbors, ensure pets are brought indoors, and prepare vehicles for extreme cold. Cold-related advisories and warnings may continue as the Arctic air mass remains locked in place.
