Davenport, Iowa – A line of thunderstorms moving southeast across eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois could become stronger through early Monday afternoon, bringing damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning and pockets of heavy rain that may disrupt travel across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, showers and thunderstorms are currently tracking along and north of Highway 30. If the storms maintain their strength over the next hour, forecasters expect them to intensify as they move south of Interstate 80, where atmospheric conditions are more favorable for severe weather. The outlook is valid through 1 p.m. Monday.
Communities including Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, the Quad Cities, Clinton, Muscatine and surrounding areas should be prepared for wind gusts up to 60 mph, dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning and brief periods of heavy rainfall that could lead to ponding on roads and reduced visibility. An isolated severe thunderstorm cannot be ruled out.
Motorists traveling on Interstate 80, Interstate 74, Highway 30 and nearby roadways should expect rapidly changing weather conditions as storms move from northwest to southeast at around 40 mph. Secure loose outdoor items and avoid parking beneath trees due to the risk of falling branches.
If thunder is heard, move indoors immediately and remain inside until at least 30 minutes after the last rumble. Continue monitoring weather alerts throughout the afternoon, as additional severe thunderstorm warnings could be issued if storms intensify.
