Iowa/Illinois – A sharp chill is settling in across the Quad Cities right now, and within hours, temperatures will drop below freezing, setting the stage for slick spots and a light snow threat by early morning.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, widespread lows will fall into the mid to upper 20s across eastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois, with some areas nearing 25°F by daybreak. That cold air arrives quickly after sunset, allowing surfaces to cool fast. Even minor moisture could freeze on contact.

Across Davenport, Moline, Rock Island, and Bettendorf, expect a hard freeze overnight. Garden plants, early blooms, and exposed pipes could be impacted. Cover sensitive vegetation now and bring pets indoors. Drivers should stay alert on bridges and overpasses, where temperatures drop fastest.

Further south, including areas near Burlington, Macomb, and into west-central Illinois, a narrow band of light snow is expected to move through late tonight into early morning. While totals remain under 1 inch, even a dusting could create slick stretches on highways like I-80, US-61, and rural roads.

This setup raises concern for patchy “flash freezing,” where leftover moisture quickly turns to ice as temperatures plunge. Conditions may deteriorate quickly before sunrise, especially in shaded or low-traffic areas.

By Tuesday, sunshine returns but temperatures stay cooler, struggling into the upper 50s. A gradual warm-up follows midweek, but for now, the focus remains on tonight’s freeze and brief snow window.

Stay prepared and plan extra time if heading out early. Are you seeing temperatures drop quickly where you are tonight?
