Quad Cities, Iowa/Illinois – A dangerous heat wave will grip the Quad Cities and much of eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois on Friday, sending afternoon heat indices soaring to 100 to 105 degrees. Health officials are warning residents to avoid strenuous outdoor activity from noon to 7 p.m. and to take steps to protect pets and livestock left outside.

According to the National Weather Service, a heat advisory is in effect for all areas south of Highway 20, including Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Sterling, and Macomb, as well as the entire Quad Cities metro. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke will be real threats, especially for vulnerable groups such as young children, seniors, and anyone without access to air conditioning.

Public health departments urge everyone to drink plenty of water, check in on neighbors, and limit time in the sun. Pets and livestock should have access to shade and fresh water. Road crews and outdoor workers are also urged to schedule frequent breaks.

The heat advisory will remain in effect through 7 p.m. Friday, with cooler, less humid air possible by Saturday. More alerts could be issued if conditions worsen.
