Davenport, Iowa – Fires could spread rapidly across the Quad Cities area today as gusty winds and dry conditions peak through the late afternoon hours.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, southwest winds will gust up to 30 mph while temperatures climb near record levels, creating an elevated fire risks across eastern Iowa and western Illinois. Dry grasses and crop fields provide fuel that can ignite and spread quickly under these conditions.
Communities including Davenport, Moline, Rock Island, and Clinton are all under heightened risk, especially in open and rural areas. Along major routes like I-80, I-74, and US-67, strong crosswinds may also impact travel, particularly for high-profile vehicles.
Officials urge residents to avoid any outdoor burning, properly dispose of cigarettes, and use caution with equipment that could produce sparks. Even small fires can grow quickly and become difficult to control.
The fire threat will diminish after sunset as winds ease, with a cold front arriving Sunday to bring cooler temperatures. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions persist.
