Quad Cities, Iowa – Residents in the Quad Cities should prepare for a soaking weekend, with up to 6 inches of rain expected and a heightened risk of flash flooding through Sunday morning.

According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities, repeated rounds of thunderstorms will bring intense rainfall rates exceeding 2 inches per hour, particularly over urban and poor drainage areas. A Flood Watch is in effect for much of eastern Iowa and western Illinois, including Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Moline, and Galesburg.

Localized totals could reach or exceed 6 inches in spots, especially where storms repeatedly track over the same area. River basins already swollen from earlier rainfall could experience renewed river flooding, with crests potentially impacting low-lying neighborhoods and rural roads. Areas most vulnerable include the Rock River near Moline and the Iowa River near Iowa City.

Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways—“Turn Around, Don’t Drown” remains the key safety reminder. Emergency officials recommend securing outdoor belongings, charging devices, and checking local alerts frequently through the weekend.

The Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through early Sunday, and more advisories may follow if rainfall intensifies or shifts. Stay weather-aware and prepare for rapid changes in conditions.
