Davenport, IA – Fires could spread rapidly across the Quad Cities region this afternoon as gusty winds and dry conditions peak, creating dangerous conditions for any outdoor ignition.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, south winds will gust up to 25 mph today and Monday, combining with dry vegetation to significantly increase fire spread potential. The highest risk window runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day, when winds and low moisture align.
Communities across eastern Iowa and western Illinois, including Davenport, Bettendorf, Moline, and Rock Island, face the greatest concern. Open fields and roadside areas along I-80, I-74, and U.S. 61 are especially vulnerable, where even a small spark could lead to fast-moving grassfires.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, delay use of equipment that could produce sparks, and properly dispose of cigarettes. Parking on dry grass should also be avoided, as heat from vehicles can ignite fires.
The elevated fire risk continues through Monday evening before storm chances arrive late Monday night into Tuesday, which may help reduce the threat. Additional advisories could be issued if conditions worsen.
