Quad Cities, IL-IA – A powerful cold front sweeping through the region today will bring a sharp temperature drop and dangerously low wind chills by tonight, according to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities.
Forecasters say temperatures will fall throughout the afternoon, with readings dropping from the upper 20s and 30s early today into the single digits by tonight. A brief window of light snow showers (10–20% chance) is possible as the front passes, though accumulation is expected to be minimal.
The bigger concern will be the bitter cold arriving overnight. Temperatures will plunge to between 0° and -13°F, with wind chills ranging from -10° to -25°F across eastern Iowa and western Illinois by early Thursday morning.
Thursday will stay frigid, with highs only reaching the single digits to mid-teens. Winds will gradually weaken Thursday night, but temperatures will again dip below zero before slowly rebounding by Friday afternoon.
Meteorologists urge residents to take precautions against the extreme cold. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in under 20 minutes at these wind chill levels. Anyone venturing outdoors should dress in layers, cover all exposed skin, and limit time outside. Pet owners are advised to bring animals indoors and check water supplies for freezing.
The cold pattern will persist into Friday morning before a gradual warm-up begins by the weekend. Highs are expected to return to the upper 20s to low 30s Friday afternoon, with dry weather continuing through Saturday.
Drivers should also be alert for slick patches where light snow or refreeze may occur on untreated roads this evening and overnight.
