Quad Cities, Iowa – Snow and strong winds continue to affect portions of eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois early Monday, prompting a Winter Weather Advisory through the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, the Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. CST Monday for areas of northeast and east-central Iowa and northwest Illinois. Affected counties include Buchanan, Delaware, Dubuque, Benton, Linn, Jones, Jackson, Iowa, Johnson, Cedar, Clinton, as well as Jo Daviess, Stephenson, and Carroll Counties in Illinois.

Cities under the advisory include Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Clinton, Maquoketa, Manchester, Independence, Vinton, Anamosa, Tipton, Galena, Freeport, and Mount Carroll.

Forecasters report additional snow accumulations of around one inch or less, but west to northwest wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour are creating areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility. Even light snowfall may result in slick and snow-covered roads, especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces.

The National Weather Service warns that the combination of snow and strong winds could make travel hazardous during the Monday morning commute. Gusty winds may also be strong enough to bring down tree branches, creating isolated roadway obstructions or minor power disruptions.

Drivers are advised to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and remain alert for sudden visibility changes, particularly in open and rural areas. Pedestrians should also use caution, as sidewalks, stairs, and driveways may be icy, increasing the risk of slips and falls.

While snowfall amounts are relatively light, officials stress that wind-driven snow and cold conditions can still lead to dangerous travel. Conditions are expected to gradually improve later in the morning as winds diminish and snow tapers off.
