Residents across the Quad Cities region of eastern Iowa and western Illinois should prepare for a windy and changeable weather pattern today, with strong northwest winds becoming the primary concern for travel and outdoor activities.

Through the day Friday, wind gusts are expected to reach 40 to 45 miles per hour, especially during the late morning and afternoon hours. These winds may make driving difficult along major roadways such as Interstate 74, Interstate 80, U.S. Highway 61, and U.S. Highway 67, particularly for high-profile vehicles including semis, vans, and vehicles towing trailers. Loose objects may be blown around, and isolated power interruptions cannot be ruled out.

Despite the strong winds, temperatures will remain near seasonal levels, with highs ranging from the mid-30s to mid-40s. Skies will feature a mix of clouds and sunshine, giving a deceptively calm appearance at times even as gusts remain strong at ground level.

By tonight into Saturday, winds will gradually diminish as cooler air settles in. Saturday will feel calmer, though temperatures will dip slightly into the mid-20s to mid-30s, depending on location. No significant precipitation impacts are expected during this period.

A notable warming trend begins on Sunday, with highs climbing into the upper 30s to lower 50s, especially south of the Quad Cities. This warming will continue into early next week, with some southern areas potentially approaching near-60 degrees, well above early February averages.

Until winds ease later today, residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items, use caution when traveling, and remain alert for rapidly changing driving conditions. While the weekend brings calmer weather, today’s strong wind event remains the primary short-term hazard across the Quad Cities region.
