Quad Cities, Iowa/Illinois – Strong winds and bitter cold are affecting the Quad Cities region today, with additional chances for light snow later this week, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service Quad Cities office reports west to northwest wind gusts up to 40 mph through sunset today. These winds, combined with cold air, are producing hazardous wind chills and may blow around unsecured objects. Motorists, particularly those driving high-profile vehicles, may encounter difficult travel conditions on exposed roadways.

Early Tuesday conditions at Quad City International Airport in Moline showed temperatures near 11°F, with wind chills around –2°F. Sustained winds near 10 mph, with higher gusts, are contributing to dangerous cold exposure during morning and evening hours.

Looking ahead, a weak weather system is expected to bring light snow Tuesday, primarily during the afternoon and evening. Accumulations are expected to be minimal, but slick spots could develop on untreated roads. Another weak system may bring additional light snow Wednesday into Wednesday night, though widespread heavy snowfall is not anticipated.

High temperatures Tuesday are forecast to reach around 31°F, followed by highs near 35°F on Wednesday. Overnight lows will remain cold, dropping into the teens, especially Wednesday night. Wind chills may again fall below zero during overnight periods.

New Year’s Day is expected to be dry and sunny, with highs near 25°F, followed by a gradual warming trend toward the weekend. By Friday, highs are forecast to climb into the low 30s, with continued dry conditions.

Spotter activation is not expected, though reports of snowfall greater than 1 inch and winter impacts are appreciated.

Commuters, students, and outdoor workers should dress for strong winds and cold today and remain alert for changing road conditions during midweek snow chances.
