Quad Cities, IA/IL – Drivers across eastern Iowa and western Illinois could see visibility drop below a mile within minutes this morning as fast-moving thunderstorms push through at 35 mph, bringing lightning and bursts of heavy rain through early afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, scattered storms with about 40% coverage are developing south of Highway 34 and expanding northeast through 1 p.m. Monday. While these storms are not expected to reach severe limits, lightning strikes, small hail, and localized downpours remain the primary hazards.

Communities from Burlington and Ottumwa to Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, and the Quad Cities are in the path, with storms also stretching east toward Peoria and Sterling. Major routes including I-80 and I-74 could see sudden slick spots and brief slowdowns, especially during heavier cells.

Emergency managers urge residents to head indoors at the first sound of thunder and avoid unnecessary travel during downpours. Even brief rainfall could pond on roadways and reduce visibility quickly.

This round tapers by early afternoon, but additional storm development is expected later today, with updates likely as conditions evolve.
