Davenport, Iowa – Snow showers moving into the Quad Cities this afternoon and early evening may combine with strong winds to create brief but hazardous travel conditions, according to the National Weather Service.
In a 4:30 a.m. Friday update, forecasters said periodic bursts of snow are expected from mid-afternoon through early evening, overlapping with gusty winds of 25 to 35 mph. While additional snow accumulation is expected to stay under 1 inch, falling and blowing snow could cause sharp drops in visibility, at times below one-half mile.
The National Weather Service placed the probability of true snow squalls near 30 percent, meaning some snow showers could briefly intensify enough to rapidly cover roads and create near-whiteout conditions. These impacts may develop and dissipate quickly, catching drivers off guard.
Travel impacts are most likely between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m., especially on open roads and bridges across Davenport, Bettendorf, Rock Island, Moline, and surrounding communities. Temperatures falling through the 20s this evening may allow snow to stick more efficiently after sunset, increasing slick spots.
Motorists are urged to allow extra travel time, slow down immediately if visibility drops, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Officials warn that even brief snow squalls have a history of causing serious crashes due to sudden visibility loss.
Drivers across the Quad Cities should remain alert through the evening commute and monitor updates as conditions evolve.
