Davenport, Iowa – Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible this evening across parts of eastern Iowa and western Illinois, with the greatest risk between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, storms are expected to develop along a cold front moving through the region. The highest risk area includes southeast Iowa, west-central Illinois, and parts of northeast Missouri.

Forecasters say large hail is the primary threat, with damaging wind gusts also possible. A tornado cannot be ruled out but is considered a lower risk at this time.

Storm intensity and coverage remain somewhat uncertain due to a capping inversion, which could limit development. However, if storms are able to fully develop later this afternoon or evening, they could quickly become severe, with the potential for hail up to 2 inches in diameter and increasing wind impacts.

Storms are expected to move east at around 40 mph, which could lead to rapidly changing conditions during the evening hours.

Residents are encouraged to have multiple ways to receive warnings and be prepared to seek shelter if storms approach.
