Davenport, Iowa – Very warm and muggy conditions are gripping the Quad Cities region tonight, with low temperatures stubbornly holding in the low to mid 70s. Residents should prepare for even hotter conditions on Wednesday, as heat indices climb near a dangerous 105 degrees.
According to the National Weather Service in Davenport, both eastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois will see oppressive humidity and daytime highs from 91 to 95 degrees on Wednesday. A heat advisory is in place, urging everyone in cities like Davenport, Moline, and Cedar Rapids to limit outdoor activities and stay hydrated. Air conditioning is recommended, especially for vulnerable groups.
By late Thursday into Friday, chances for scattered showers and thunderstorms increase, especially north and northwest of Cedar Rapids. While not every area will see rain, isolated storms could produce gusty winds and brief downpours. The risk of severe weather remains low, but motorists should watch for wet roads and rapidly changing conditions on I-80 and U.S. 61.
Hot, humid air will linger until Friday, when a weak cold front drops temperatures back into the mid-80s. Until then, avoid strenuous outdoor work during peak heat, check on neighbors, and make sure pets have access to water and shade.
Further advisories may be issued if storms become more widespread or temperatures remain elevated through the weekend.
