Davenport, Iowa – A sweltering stretch of heat combined with late-night storms is creating dangerous conditions across eastern Iowa and western Illinois through Tuesday, with heat indices expected to climb as high as 110°F in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, isolated evening storms will taper off Sunday before a stronger line of storms pushes in after midnight. Damaging winds are the primary threat. Meanwhile, a heat advisory remains in effect, with the hottest conditions forecast Monday and Tuesday across the region.
Cities including Davenport, Moline, Rock Island, and Galesburg should prepare for oppressive humidity, especially during the afternoon hours. Storm activity may bring brief relief overnight, but forecasters warn that it could also impact daily high temperatures early this week. Those sensitive to heat, including older adults and children, are urged to stay hydrated and avoid strenuous activity.
Drivers should also remain cautious, particularly during the overnight hours, as strong wind gusts could make travel hazardous. Residents are reminded never to leave pets or children in vehicles and to check on neighbors without air conditioning.
Storm chances will linger into midweek, with a slight cooldown possible by Wednesday. More alerts may follow if conditions intensify.
