Quad Cities, Iowa/Illinois – Dense fog is blanketing roads across eastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois this morning, threatening to slow the commute along I-80 and surrounding highways until 9 a.m. Monday.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities, calm winds and clear skies overnight have combined with wet ground to create patches of dense fog, particularly along and south of Interstate 80. Visibility may drop to a quarter mile or less in several areas, making travel hazardous for morning drivers.
Motorists in Davenport, Bettendorf, Moline, and Rock Island are urged to use low-beam headlights, reduce speed, and leave extra braking distance between vehicles. Area school bus routes and delivery schedules could see delays as a result of poor visibility. Emergency officials remind drivers to avoid sudden stops and to stay alert for slowed or stopped vehicles on the road.
Dense fog events like this are common in July but can catch early commuters off guard, especially near river valleys and open farmland south of I-80. Drivers should allow additional travel time and be prepared for changing conditions through the morning.
Fog is expected to lift by late morning, but updates may follow if visibility remains low. Motorists should monitor local news or the NWS Quad Cities for further advisories.
