Cookeville, TN – A routine traffic stop in Putnam County this morning led to 18 people being detained and two young children placed into state custody after deputies reported finding drugs and signs of child endangerment.
According to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, deputies stopped a White Ford Econoline van towing a trailer on Highway 111 Southbound near Spring Creek Road at approximately 10:58 a.m. Friday. Deputies reported a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle as they approached.
Investigators said 18 passengers were inside the van. Three of the passengers were women, and two were juveniles, ages 3 and 4. Deputies confirmed that three passengers are allegedly in the country illegally, while the remaining individuals are still under an active ICE review.
During the search, deputies reportedly found multiple pounds of marijuana stored in different areas of the vehicle. Sheriff’s officials said the 16 adult passengers were taken into custody and transported to the Putnam County Jail, where they are expected to face charges including Child Endangerment and additional drug-related offenses.
The two children were taken into custody by the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services (DCS) for protection.
Sheriff Eddie Farris stated the case remains an active, ongoing investigation. Additional details—including potential federal involvement—are expected as the investigation continues.
Residents traveling along Hwy 111 late Friday morning may have seen delays during the stop and investigation. Authorities did not report any injuries.
