San Juan, Puerto Rico – Fire crews across Puerto Rico’s southwest coast are bracing for rapid wildfire spread by late morning as dry air and gusty winds push conditions into critical territory through 5 p.m. today.
According to the National Weather Service in San Juan, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. AST for the Southwest Coastal Plains and Mona Island. East to east-southeast winds will range from 16 to 23 mph, with sea breeze gusts reaching 28 mph. Relative humidity will drop into the mid to upper 40 percent range during the midday hours.
The Keetch-Byram Drought Index in Cabo Rojo stands at 628, well above critical fire weather thresholds, signaling extremely dry fuels capable of igniting quickly. Areas along the southwest coastal plains, including fire weather zone 027, face the highest risk during peak heating hours.
Any spark could spread rapidly under these conditions. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents should avoid activities that could create open flames or sparks. Secure trailer chains, dispose of cigarettes properly and keep vehicles off dry grass.
Conditions will improve after 5 p.m., but elevated fire danger may persist if dry weather continues into the weekend.
