Pueblo, Colorado – Fast-moving winds and extremely dry air will create a high fire risk across southern Colorado by Sunday afternoon, with the most dangerous conditions lining up along and west of the I-25 corridor near the New Mexico border.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, gusty winds combined with low humidity will peak Sunday afternoon into the evening, especially across the southeast mountains, valleys, and plains. Humidity levels could drop near or below 10 percent while winds push past 30 mph, creating conditions where fires can start and spread rapidly.

Communities from Trinidad to Walsenburg and into Raton, New Mexico, face the greatest concern. Areas west of I-25, including foothill terrain and rural zones, will be especially vulnerable due to dry fuels and limited recent rainfall. Fire starts in these conditions can move quickly across grasslands and threaten nearby roadways, including stretches of I-25 and U.S. 160.

Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, discard cigarettes safely, and delay activities like welding or off-road driving that could spark flames. Even small ignitions could escalate within minutes under these conditions.

The fire threat will remain elevated through Sunday night, and additional alerts or restrictions could be issued if conditions intensify.
